The audience sees the resolution long before any of Sling Blade's characters do, but that's because we're more removed from the situation than they are. And it is the same for this song; audience might have said: "I'm afraid [they] are in a bad way."
Thankfully I am removed from this toil of dissonance that is meant to inflict wounds, most of the time.
If it were Karl singing, he might start by saying, "Gimme the key."
