This is rather ironic, given another blog's entry with a Mike Portnoy video. Doing a lot with a lot or a lot with a little, talent is talent.
I would not say that Mike Portnoy is not talented. There's a lot of amazing drummers. I remember one drum duet on YouTube where the drummers heads were all clear and you could clearly see "G#" written on the back of one of his wall of toms. Steve Gadd vs. someone. I forget. But it's easier to play a melody on drums if you have a wall of tuned toms than if you have just a hi-hat, and here, Max Roach plays melodically on just a hi-hat.
Oh, I didn't meant to imply Portnoy's not talented. I think he's a drum god - talent cousin to Peart. I just found it funny that this Roach and Portnoy illustrate that talent is as talent does, regardless of equipment. :)
