Guitar -> Effects -> DI box. You know what happens when you plug a 1/4" cable insufficiently into your DI box? You get a thin, trebly and quiet tone, tone you spend time trying to adjust for.
What happens when you discover this in the middle of a gig? You suddenly get a big blast of volume.
I did not have fun this evening.

Do you know what happens when you have a very firm guitar button input on your Breedlove acoustic (which is new and you're not used to) and you tell your sound guy to jack the volume and you do the same on your guitar's pre-amp? And then finally you push the damn cable in all the way?
Yep, the same thing that happened to you. But it was only practice. :-)
